Jörg Herold

Born 1965,  Germany

Jörg Herold who is originally from Leipzig trained from 1986-1988 as a stucco maker then went on to study painting at the Study of painting at Hochschule für Graphik und Buchkunst Leipzig and Hochschule Berlin-Weißensee from 1987 to 1990.  Herold has exhibited widely including at the Documenta X and the Venice Biennale in 1995.

Jörg Herold refers to himself as a documentary archaeologist. He is fascinated by private and public cultural memories, by private and public environments and their history and by personal items and how they are perceived in his memory. His interest in history and the current lives of marginalized people has taken him in 2006-2007 to the Caucasus and on long journeys through Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Laos.  Herold uses his art to show us how ‘digging’ into our memories holds possibilities for the future and how understanding the identity of the local also explains the global.
