Ruud Van Empel studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Sint Joost Breda and now lives and works in Amsterdam. Over the past decade he has become one of Europe’s most important contemporary photographers. He has participated in countless solo and group shows around the world including museum shows at the NoordBrabants Museum in Holland and Ulsan the Culture and Arts Centre in Korea. In Autumn 2011 he will have a major solo show at the Groninger Museum Groningen, The Netherlands. Van Empel photographs are also in many important private and public collections worldwide.
Van Empel’s hyper realistic world is carefully crafted and demonstrates an artist who is both a great draftsman and a visionary. His photos not only feature imaginary locations like forests and ponds but also go further and create imaginary children made up of body parts from dozens of other photographs. Van Empel has painstakingly created images made up of hundreds of visual components all joined together in stunning and colourful high gloss photographic compositions. In his imagery Van Empel explores issues like childhood innocence, nostalgia, beauty, nature, existential thoughts and race.
