Jumaldi Alfi

Born in 1972, Indonesia.

Jumaldi Alfi is originally from Lintau, West Sumatra. He studied at the Indonesian Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta. The artist now lives and works in Yogyakarta where he is an active and prominent member of the local contemporary art scene. Alfi has exhibited widely in Asia, Europe and the USA.

Alfi was a co-founder and member of Jendela Art Group who earlier on in their careers made their mark on the local art scene by showing surprising works that moved away from socio-political themes, technical sophistication and realist painting and explored instead work that focused on non formal minimalism featuring simple visual elements of line, color and texture.

Alfi’s recent paintings are complex and highly diverse in style, marked by innovation, sophistication, skill, and depth. His work features both Eastern and Western influences. Eastern influences include Buddhism, nature and poetry, whilst Western influences include German artists like Anselm Kiefer, Martin Kippenberger, pop music and Greek Mythology.
