Gino Rubert

Born 1969, Mexico

Spanish based Rubert lives and works in Barcelona. In addition to painting and drawing, he works with video and installations, as well as writing stories. Rubert studied at the Parsons School of Design, New York then took on a fellowship at the Spanish Academy in Rome in 1993-1994, Rubert has subsequently taught at a number of art schools. His work is present in numerous collections and has also been shown in Berlin’s Künstlerhaus Bethanien and the Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofia.

Rubert’s work deals with love, desire, dependencies and conflicts in states of emotion removed from reality. In his pictorial world men and women become toys or marionettes, the body itself becomes a spare parts depot and an object of research. The artist places himself in his pictures time and again, as someone seeking protection. Rubert wants to provoke and unsettle us, the viewers, by making us feel like voyeurs, peeping into his curious world.
