Born 1969, Japan
Tomoo Gokita lives and works in Tokyo, Japan. He has had several solo shows in the USA at the Honor Fraser Gallery in LA and ATM Gallery NY as well as at the Taka Ishii Gallery in Japan. Taka Ishii also gave him a solo show at Frieze in 2008. The most recent cover of Flaunt showcased his pig-eared portrait “El Topo,” and publications of his works include “Oh! Tengoku” (2001) and “Lingerie Wrestling” (2000). He was awarded the Gold Prize at the Art Director’s Club 80th Annual Awards in New York.
Tomoo Gokita’s mysterious black and white paintings reveal a world that exists between abstraction and reality. His technique of gouache on paper and canvas creates intimate velvety textures. His work mixes a range of references, from lingerie, calligraphy and Western pin-up girls, to professional wrestling, third-rate porn and beer. The results are dark and surreal, with an atmosphere reminiscent at times of the novels of Murukami.
Some of Gokita’s more figurative works could classify him as a surrealist whilst other works are more abstract demonstrating an improvisatory approach to painting that could classify him as a contemporary abstract expressionist.
